Buying natural fancy colour diamonds in Hong Kong

Why Hong Kong sits at the centre of the fancy colour trade, and how to buy well from a specialist rather than a generalist.

Hong Kong is one of the world's great diamond crossroads. The record for the most expensive diamond ever sold at auction — a Fancy Vivid pink — was set in Hong Kong, and the city's fairs draw the trade's colour buyers twice a year. If you are buying a natural fancy colour diamond in Asia, this is the market it moves through.

Specialist, not generalist

Fancy colour is not a corner of the white-diamond business; it is a different discipline. Colour is graded on its own scale, cut for a different goal, and priced on hue and saturation rather than the familiar four Cs. Buying from a house that trades colour every day — and can show you why one "Fancy Vivid Yellow" outprices another — is the single biggest advantage a buyer has.

How we trade

NFCD has sourced, graded and traded natural fancy colour diamonds for three generations, out of Hong Kong, Mumbai, Surat and Dubai. Our cutters in Surat shape rough to deepen colour; our Hong Kong desk is where buyers meet the stones. Every diamond is independently certified by GIA, IGI or HRD, with full grading specifications and, wherever possible, video.

Buying well

  • Start from the grade — hue, intensity and overtone tell you most of the story before you see the stone.
  • See it in good light — grading describes a range; your eye settles it.
  • Check the report — a natural colour origin, and a report number matching any laser inscription.
  • Ask about a hold or an offer — the trade works on both, and a relationship manager can guide either.
