Fancy yellow diamonds: value, grades and how to buy

Yellow is where most collectors meet fancy colour. It is the most available of the natural fancy colours, the easiest to find in larger sizes, and the clearest place to learn how colour — not the familiar four Cs — sets the price of a natural fancy colour diamond.

Where the colour comes from

A yellow diamond owes its colour to nitrogen sitting in place of carbon in the crystal, absorbing blue light and leaving a warm yellow behind. Nitrogen is the most common colouring element in diamond, which is why yellows are more plentiful — and more affordable — than pinks, blues or greens.

The intensity ladder

Yellow is graded on the same intensity scale as every fancy colour, with one quirk: a yellow only becomes fancy once it is more saturated than "Z" on the colourless D-to-Z scale. Above that line the grades run Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, with Fancy Deep for the darker, richer stones. The vivid, high-saturation yellows the trade calls "canary" sit at the top and command the steepest premium.

Between a Fancy Light and a Fancy Vivid of the same size, colour alone can multiply the price several times over.

What moves the price

• Saturation first — a pure, vivid yellow outruns a pale one every time.
• Overtone — a clean yellow is worth more than a brownish or greenish yellow of the same intensity; the modifier is written before the main colour on the report ("Fancy Brownish Yellow").
• Shape — radiants and cushions dominate because their faceting deepens the face-up colour, so they reach a given grade more readily than a round.
• Carat — the per-carat rate itself climbs with size, because large, vividly coloured crystals are scarce.

Every yellow worth buying carries a report from GIA, IGI or HRD stating a natural colour origin — the line between a natural rarity and a treated stone worth a fraction of the price. Read the grade as a precise starting point, then view the stone or its video: two diamonds can share the words "Fancy Vivid Yellow" and still differ in the hand.
